Will a sunbed hold my weight? Plus size travel worries…
This is one of those posts that I’m not sure anyone will ever actually search for, but if you’ve ever stood next to a plastic sunbed and wondered whether it was going to hold you then this one’s for you. 😂
I’ve lost a bit of weight recently but I’d still class myself as plus size and when we got to the pool on our first day here in Ibiza, I was joking with my partner about whether the sunbed was actually going to hold my weight or whether I was about to embarrass myself by collapsing it.
I was (mostly) joking but the man on the sunbed in front of us obviously heard me because he turned round and told me not to worry as he was 21 stone and his was holding him perfectly fine!
He was definitely on the cuddlier side of 20 stone so I instantly did feel reassured when I saw him laid on the sunbed, soaking up the sun with his pint in hand. I’m nowhere close to that so at that point, I knew I’d be OK.
For anyone who has the same random worry as me, these are the sunbeds I’m talking about:

I’ve spent plenty of time on mine since then (although considerably less time actually lying in the sun because it’s far too hot and I spend most of my day shuffling my sunbed around trying to stay in the shade) and it’s been absolutely fine.
No creaking. No wobbling. No dramatic collapse into a heap of white plastic.
Obviously I have no idea what the official weight limit is and I know that every sunbed in every hotel is the same. But these ones comfortably held someone who told me he was 21 stone so I’m taking that as a good bit of information that’s worth sharing.
So now you know the answer to ‘Will a hotel sunbed hold a plus size person?’
In this case, yes.
And I can now add “fear of demolishing a sunbed” to the list of things I didn’t actually need to worry about on holiday.
Also, when I did a quick Google Search as I was writing this post, I found out that most commercial hotel sunbeds are pretty good for us cuddly people as they can hold between 300 to 400 lbs (136 to 181 kg), as long as they’re in good condition.
